Freeware as portable legality

Is the redistribution of a free program as a portable illegal?
Answers from a lawyer or somebody with law knowledge will be great!
Some time ago I didn't give a shit about law, now I do!

Every program whether freeware  or commercial   ( which is created by a serious developer) comes with  its own EULA/License Agreement that clearly states (or should state) what you can or cannot do with it. It is diferent for each and every program and depends on the will and wishes of the author unless they had decided to license the program under a common licensing scheme (like the GPL license etc for example).

You can read here in detail about the different Software Licenses Explained in a SIMPLE and easy to understand manner and also on Wikipedia here .

general rule of thumb would be contact the developer(s) and ask them

Yeah, of course the most obvious way :) (and the best one as well)

When youngsters asked me  how to "hack" and get hold of a girl's phone number , used to say the same : The best way would be to go and ask her for it :)

There is after all no point in getting hold of the phone number if one  comes out as a creep or otherwise cannot use it to call her in the end !
