very noob setup question

I'm running windows 10 and have VMware workstation 7 installed.

I would like to have XP and Win 7 running in separate VMs for beginning malware analysis.

Does anyone know if this is possible to do this legally without paying a lot of money for licenses?

Intially I thought XP was free (at least XP mode is supported but it seems only possible on windows 7).

Sorry for the lame questions but it is frustrating being stuck in setting up a safe environment eager to start beginning malware investigation.

Best regards

Officially, you should have licence for every OS you have in a VM. In real life, everyone kinda does it..

Or, you could use unactivated 90 days trial version of Windows. Even MS suggests using such images for development purposes.. Take a look at https://modern.ie/

Extreme Coders

VM images from Windows 7 to 10 are available directly from Microsoft.
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/

Olders versions of Windows viz. XP and Vista are available as well but not listed under that page.
You can find them at archive.org: https://web.archive.org/web/20151101103551/https://dev.modern.ie/tools/vms/

Just make sure to not pull the images directly from archive.org.
For example if the link is
https://web.archive.org/web/20151101103551/https://az412801.vo.msecnd.net/vhd/VMBuild_20141027/VMware/IE6/Windows/IE6.XP.For.Windows.VMware.zip

Remove the web.archive.org part to get to the actual url
https://az412801.vo.msecnd.net/vhd/VMBuild_20141027/VMware/IE6/Windows/IE6.XP.For.Windows.VMware.zip

Thanks to both of you!

Found the VMs I was looking for.

I have some issues though because my workstation is too old for the discs but I hope I can find a fix for that.

Thanks again!

Is there a specific reason why you want to use VMWare 7? It's old and buggy and not compatible with modern guest OSes. If you're using a pirated version, get VMWare 12. If you insist on staying 100% legal, use VirtualBox.

My 2 cents..

As you guessed I have a license for VMware 7. I have problems getting the 'free' windows VMs to work with VMware 7 so I will now try VirtualBox. I wish that I had got that idea myself.

Your 2 cents are worth a million!
