Ronar22
Hi All, Recently a new protector for games called Denuvo came into the spotlight. The guys behind it are the same who developed SecuROM but they are now independent and started a new startup. Quoted from their site What is the Denuvo Anti-Tamper solution?Denuvo Anti-Tamper technology prevents the debugging, reverse engineering and changing of executable files to strengthen the security of games. It is not a DRM solution, but rather, Denuvo Anti-tamper protects DRM solutions, such as Origin Online Access or the Steam license management system, from being circumvented. What made this protection interesting is that it has been used in FIFA 2015 and since 23 September no crack has been released yet.Over three months!!! Does anyone know any technical info about this protector? why it's so that hard to get cracked?!!
evlncrn8
fifa wasnt cracked due to some politics in asia with topware or something, where 3dm didnt want to piss them offthe protection was cracked - dragon age inquisition, so its not 'uncrackable'also, with it being new it takes time to research and then crack.. that always happens with new protections, butdenuvo seem to be patting themselves on the back as if this is some huge achievement, just marketing bullshit Edited January 5, 2015 by evlncrn8
Ronar22
Thanks evlncrn8 for the info. Didn't know that It has been cracked already in other game and sure it's not uncrackable. Rule number one, "As long as it runs, it's crackable"
Blah
https://torrentfreak.com/denuvo-properly-cracked-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-first-victim-160809/ Quote Denuvo is the daddy of all gaming anti-piracy systems so when several protected titles appeared online this weekend, excitement was high. Shortly after, however, the loophole was closed. Now the champagne corks are popping again, with the first clear evidence that at least one iteration of Denuvo has been properly cracked. Blah
https://torrentfreak.com/crackers-swarm-as-denuvo-website-leaks-secret-information-170205/ Quote While the folks at Denuvo are leaders in the field of video game protection, the same cannot be said about their website. In an embarrassing blunder, the company has left some directories and files open to the public and right now members of the cracking community are downloading and scrutinizing the contents. Anti-piracy outfit Denuvo has taken a bit of a battering lately after chinks began appearing in the company’s armor. Last weekend, cracking group CPY defeated the protection on Resident Evil 7 in just five days, a record for the anti-tamper technology. etc etc etc cheers B
evlncrn8
any links to the files ? nm, found them -> https://revolt.group/denuvo/ not really much of interest, some spammy emails to them, some funny ones, some of reinhard (ceo) testing the site and giving away his email address (though this is on the whois info for denuvo anyway), and of course the web admin exposing his email addresses (and domains)... and some devs emailing asking for info... the other introduction files etc arent really too interesting and they used securom pa on them... (yawn)... but it is quite humorous that a 'security solutions' company doesnt do internal checking (they dont even check their 'protected' exe's too much either)... Blah
https://torrentfreak.com/game-pirates-celebrate-fall-of-denuvos-brand-new-protection-170414/ Game Pirates Celebrate Fall of Denuvo’s Brand New Protection Quote A new version of the Denuvo anti-piracy technology that was supposed to prevent games being cracked quickly has been defeated in a month. As usual, pirates are celebrating, but this time it's a bit more personal. When raising funding for their game 2Dark the makers promised no DRM, so the cracking of their title is being viewed as particularly sweet. When file-sharing was first getting off the ground, groups like the RIAA and MPAA were public enemy number one. They’re not exactly popular now but neither receive the hatred liberally poured on Denuvo. etc etc.. https://crackwatch.com/ lol Edited April 23, 2017 by Blah
Teddy Rogers
Here is an example of DRM overkill, Rime. A few days back Baldman removed Denuvo with the following comment... Quote Game is super nice and you should support devs, buy it when you can do it. But the game will be much better without that huge abomination called Denuvo. In Rime that ugly creature went out of control – how do you like three fornicating hundreds of THOUSANDS calls to “triggers” during initial game launch and savegame loading? Did you wonder why game loading times are so long – here is the answer 🙂 In previous games like Sgw3, Nier, Prey there were only about 1000 “triggers” called, so we have x300 here. Next – 300,000 called “triggers” were just warmup for Denuvo, after 30 minutes of gameplay it became 2 fornicating MILLIONS of called “triggers”. Protection now calls about 10-30 triggers every second during actual gameplay, slowing game down. In previous games like Sgw3, Nier, Prey there were only about 1-2 “triggers” called every several minutes during gameplay, so do the math. Don’t forget that triggers is under VM and heavily obfuscated, which obviously does not improve perfomance. Good example of game stutter... This is notable, not least since the developers promised to remove Denuvo if it was cracked. Furthermore, a report from the cracker suggests that an apparently desperate Denuvo pulled out all the stops to protect RiME, but still failed. p.s. Hayokuma
I do agree with all these companies that want to protect their software specially the first few weeks, however I'm against anything that hurts performance in games, that's not good for the companies neither for the players. Do you think that it's normal that some people have to download the cracked version because it works better than the one they bought?

That's how obfuscation works : it complexifies the code process, therefore more code to execute, therefore slower program. abhi93696
BTW i don't understand/know what do they(crackers of denovo) get by doing so... i.e cracking a complex protection so fast(in few days only) requires a lot of time & effort (at the end of the cracker) I mean r they backend by other companies or something similar or just 4 hobby?? Various parts of Denuvo have been figured out and beaten for a while. However, rather than fix these spots properly, Denuvo instead piles more shit ontop of their protection and calls it a new version. The underlying issues are still there and the methods used to bypass various things still work. New methods are needed to crack/bypass the newer parts of the protection but the older parts are just the same mess as before. Denuvo is progressively getting worse because of this update method. Rather than go back and fix things properly and in full, they pile more on top to keep their buyers under the assumption the protection is being actively worked on and updated regularly when it really isn't. As the current crackers of this protection pointed out, the past calls and performance hits to the game were low. In most cases you couldn't notice any problems except for specific games that themselves had poor coding and implementation of the protection. Now that has become a much bigger problem with the amount of callbacks and triggers as they call them happening inside of the game. I'd assume Denuvo is implemented in the same manner as protections such as Themedia using special macros to trigger the protections pieces to be included, injected and ran as needed. So when you have a call to save a game, there is a piece of code calling on Denuvo to handle certain triggers. Something on the lines of: void SaveFile::Save(const std::string& path) { // Mark function to be handled by Denuvo's special file triggers.. DENUVO_FILE_TRIGGER(); // Do the save work here.. } So now when the code compiles, either a Denuvo function is virtualized into this or a marker is made to be overwritten later by an injected code chunk etc. In the earlier versions, I'd assume this was simple, small impact and basic. However now, with games such as Rime we are seeing millions of triggers like this happening making me personally believe either Denuvo has created a full-on SDK that is being used in games to replace common functionality of things such as file access, network access, etc. to then add their own stuff. On the bright side, I feel we are going to start seeing a major decline in Denuvo now unless they really step up their game and fix their latest version of their protection. The performance hits that are now proven countless times to be at fault of the protection and not the game developers is going to really tarnish the companies name. They have such a bad reputation as it is for harming the performance of games yet claim they don't that at this point with Rime really proving them wrong, I don't feel like companies are going to keep using their protection for the sake of a week of sales.

mrexodia
They have denied that VMProtect was part of their product from what I know. But according to this story they licensed VMProtect with a Company License ($999) and then used it to protect their protection engine. Earlier versions of Denuvo did the same with SecuROM.
