"Nothing could be more contrary to the Skype philosophy."

That is how I know they consulted a lawyer and they did make data mining changes.. This single phrase protects them from lawsuits.

The only real way to prove them wrong is through data logging. That will only work if they don't peer all traffic though, in the peer scenerio spying is transparent to clients and lawyers would have to subpeona information that would likely be altered before exchange..

how? This is exactly one of those vague phrases without any meaning, as we lack a clear definition of Skype`s philosophy, and even if we had one, it probably wouldnt hold in court.

Fact is, if the US government really wants data of yours that is being/has been processed by a US company, they will get it. And you`re unlikely to ever find out.

Anyways, all this is peanuts compared to the OS update apple just rolled out. There it even states in the terms of use that pretty much all your data is send back for "processing"...oh well.

Because their official statements can't be used by prosecutors..

This is about MS getting the information really.. US will just tap in at the ISPs fiber optic gateways. At AT&T main data center where they have multiplexers and decouplers there is actually a famous part of the building only accessable by high level FBI and up.. They physically go there to swap data storage instead of using VPN or some custom encypted link; this is mainly protection from foreign intelligence and hackers.

Pretty much all rural and small branch ISPs lease high speed uplinks from the two big providers in the US. Actually one now cause they semi-merged.

The only accessable part of this network is audited continuasly from APs and open links by the same people who manage bank center and ATM-net audits for major branches, they have a office in NYC.

Interestingly it's trivial for another super power like Russia to get this data because of corruption. The US gov works around convienence and personal finances..
