Need Help Implementing Web Service

Hi All

I want to implement a webservice that is connected to an sql database on a server and want to return the data in the SQL database in XML format to the client who access the data from any application using the http XML request ..any suggestion to get started would be appreciated ...i have installed apache and sql server 2005 on a machine ...initially i want help implementing this webservice ...all the documentation i have run across are too confusing ...and i want to access the web service from a browser ..later on i can code the application for doing the same...any web developers who do this or have done this before can guide me with step by step or point me where i can get a step by step documentation ..what all i need and how should i connect my database to me apache and implement this using XML over http ..
