Considering Snd's skills hmm it's useless to protect.. :)

Enthusiasm and all aside, some dongles offer very good protection. And code virtualization sucks hard too - the more ****ed up the handlers, the more it sucks.

But, i see no point in continuing this conversation. It's being brought to discussion to every board at least once every trimester.

And it serves no other purpose, than helping authors choose the funkiest stuff.

Lots of threads on this... it all depends on how well the protection is implemented by the author. But Execryptor, Themida, and Securom seems to be the most difficult.

I think everything can. Simply because once a new protection is released people already work at trying to break it. Given time everything can be cracked

Everything can be cracked forever.. B) just takes more time..

wtf? i think Some stuff is really uncrackable for example look this

Your request at the request board is irrelevant to this topic.

This topic has been trashed because the request cannot be registered.

Online stuff cannot be cracked by simple physical barriers.. Nothing to do with protection..

We're talking about protection here.. And everything is crackable then..

yes im talking about protection too.. but was it not a simple protection if everything is crackable? anyway, thanks for response..

;) I see this old thread has been revived..

So for historical accuracy.. my posts in here about TimePassages being uncrackable... well that turned out to be BS

The legend, Nacho-dj//ArtTeam - was bored one week and thought he'd have a "bit of fun"... and keygenned this bitch, every version.. every module.. every flavour.. so yeah, I changed my mind..??

Maybe every app can be reversed

It simply depends on the knowledge and determination of the reverser attempting the 'attack'.... maybe???

What you think?? ;)

Simple answer, anything can be cracked

What

Well there is a difference between uncrackable and unrealistically crackable. Realistically, if it runs it can be pwned, however, unrealistically, if its impossible to crack without a valid key, if probably wont get cracked, but still it is possible to crack via just brute force, no matter how long it takes.

This ^

The point of the discussion is not if everything is crackable but if it's actually crackable in an appropiate amount of time, that is without quitting your job, bruteforcing serials for 2 years, etc...

If you read lena's initial text below the poll it says:

BTW, I'm not questioning the theoretical question. Of course -theoretically- there is a way to circumvent any protection. The question is meant as "Can the skilled coder implement so many twists and turns in his program that it becomes so hard and difficult that it is never/ever defeatable?"

Even that is not enough.. Time is something reversers make.. Generically speaking it may take 4 months, but once done the second time it'll take 2 days the third time 1 hour.. You tell people the info and voila.. another protection gone.. You'd have to make something that can withstand the total learning capacity of a lot of crackers..

You'd have to make something that can withstand the combined thinking power of thousand of individuals that can decide to work together if needed.. And with more saying it's incredibly hard the higher the stakes become to the RE scene to prove itself.. Eventually either by luck or sheer commitment it will be broken piece by piece, and making a protection takes a whole lot longer than breaking it.. a few developers against an army of people that are generically speaking either smart or well educated or both is a downhill battle..

The biggest problem is the challenge, crackers thrive on it.. Make it simple and you got some newbies testing their metal, make it hard and you will have the grandmasters of RE testing their metal.. That is something you cannot win..

Also the paradox, you'd have to be a cracker to code something against crackers.. Therefore there's already a cracker that can crack your protection.. You can.. And there's always a better cracker somewhere.. (look to the east.. somewhere in russia and china.. )

For encrypted stuff etc.. Well yeah it's unbreakable unless you got the key or a quantum computer.. (but we only need one key.. )

Or if you find shortcuts in the algorithm. Something the NSA has supposedly done on every public algo ^^

I don't know...

The first day of the requester board I asked that Raidenftpd to be done.

Never got anything ..

Didn't bump it..

Gave up.

So there are somethings that are just too much work!

i think that everything can be cracked, there is no a compelete code.

every system must have a hole, lol

Whilst every application can be cracked, realistically some software is just too much hassle and not really worth the effort unless it's for personal use and you cant afford it, even then, it may still not be worth it.

Take Raidenftpd for example, I took a look at that for Willie, the actual registration scheme/method wasn't too hard to grasp(If my memory is correct), however the amount of checks it made(over 1000) made the software an extremely tedious task to crack.

So yes, it can be cracked, but no one really wants to spend that long on one piece of software looking at the same things over and over again, just to find it still doesn't work... You can see where this is going.

Practically, only some software can be cracked.

Theoretically, everything can be cracked.

You've also got the case of software that needs a key to decrypt important routines, it isn't really cracking if you've already got the key... Or though from that you may be able to study the algorithm at hand and perhaps create your own decryption keys, such a thing takes time and effort in most scenario's.

Overall... I voted #3.

Just my 2 cents.

one thing though...why are some protections (like latest securom) which has been cracked but not too many people can do it?? theres so many www teams with sick skillz but yet its still not as commonly cracked like something like armadillo,etc..

also with the 0day teams..do they know something that others dont or is it cause they get the appz or whatever before anybody else to figure it out?

Simple it takes time to master because it's a very good protection.. Games are also traditionally not cracked by webgroups and 0day.. Only the game/iso scene do this.. And those guys are simply extremely good. There are few webgroups with members that good..

As for 0day (apps not games) they do have their people to get stuff early etc.. However skillwise they're at the same level as webgroups.. Though I might say the webgroups have the edge right now..

Some nice friendly rivalry. ;)

my guess is the securom dudes probably work for the company or know somebody,etc....

i would think by now the info would be leaked..people that work there probably were in scene groups in the past.. ;)

and yeah..i agree...i think www teams are just as good as 0day..sum talented people around these hillz... :)

Programs which have encrypted sections are impossible to crack in real time still that doesn
